Missing Weapon

Do not snatch the word of truth from my mouth, for I have put my
hope in Your laws.
Psalm 119:43 (NIV)

Recommended Reading
Psalm 119:41-48

During the worst days of the recent war in Iraq, the newspapers
told of a Marine corporal, a very brave woman, at a checkpoint in
Fallujah. Her job was to frisk Iraqi women for bombs. One day after a
long shift, she was returning to camp when her convoy was attacked and
she was thrown unconscious to the ground. Coming to, she reached for
her weapon, but it was gone. The thought of being in a firefight
without her weapon was terrifying. Though wounded in the attack, she
survived; but she never wants to be caught in such a situation again.

As God's soldiers, our weapon is the Scripture-the Sword of the
Spirit. There's nothing more terrifying than to find our weapon missing
while we're in a firefight with the world or the devil. Too many
believers forget to carry God's Word in their hearts. Among Christians
today, there is Bible-less preaching, Bible-less counseling, Bible-less
thinking, and Bible-less living. We cannot engage in spiritual warfare
if our weapon is lost, misplaced, rusty, or neglected. Our power comes
from the authority of God's Word.

As I listened to the sermon this past Sunday I recalled a short piece of spiritual guidance that was shared through “Our Daily Bread”. This helped me through a very stressful time at work last year and I keep by chair to remind me when I have difficulty:

The problems that we face each day
Can seem too much to bear
Until we turn our eyes to Christ
And trust His tender care.

Love in Christ,
Wayne

Devotional just sent to me by Doris;

"The person who meditates on God's pattern 'day and night' will
prosper in whatever he does" (Psalm 1:1-3).

Nothing in the world can be properly understood unless it is
understood in terms of God's design and plan.

What Good Works Are Good For

What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith
but does not have works? Can faith save him?
James 2:14

Scripture memory is an important discipline in the Christian
life. If there is a downside to memorizing one verse at a time, it is
that important verses lose their context. For instance, Romans 8:28
needs verse 29 for its full effect. And Ephesians 2:8-9 (how we are
saved) needs verse 10 (why we are saved) to get the full import of
Paul's message and meaning.

Ephesians 2:8-9 are well-known verses that establish the truth
that we are saved "by grace . . . through faith." And it makes clear
that our salvation is "not of works, lest anyone should boast." But then
verse 10 makes it just as clear that we are "created in Christ Jesus for
good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them."
So, we are not saved by good works, but we are definitely saved for good
works. We are saved so we can carry out those acts and deeds that
fulfill the purpose for our salvation: continuing the kingdom works that
Jesus did in the image of Christ himself (Romans 8:29).

Sometimes Christians are confused about good works-but we
shouldn't be. They are the evidence, not the basis, of the believer's
salvation.

We must come to good works by faith, and not to faith by good
works.
William Gurnall

Excerpt from Daily Bread
One reason we’re left here on earth and not taken to heaven immediately after trusting in Christ for salvation is that God has work for us to do. “Man is immortal,” Augustine said, “until his work is done.”

The time of our death is not determined by anyone or anything here on earth. That decision is made in the councils of heaven. When we have done all that God has in mind for us to do, then and only then will He take us home—and not one second before. As Paul put it, “David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep” (Acts 13:36).

In the meantime, until God takes us home, there’s plenty to do. “I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day,” Jesus said. “Night is coming when no one can work” (John 9:4). Night is coming when we will once for all close our eyes on this world, or our Lord will return to take us to be with Him. Each day brings that time a little closer.

As long as we have the light of day, we must work—not to conquer, acquire, accumulate, and retire, but to make visible the invisible Christ by touching people with His love. We can then be confident that our “labor is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Cor. 15:58). — David H. Roper

If you rely upon God’s strength

And live a life that’s true,

Then what you do in Jesus’ name

Will be His work through you. —D. De Haan

In God’s eyes, true greatness is serving others.
